Enhanced Security Measures in Delhi Ahead of Independence Day Celebrations

High Alert in National Capital for Independence Day

In preparation for the Independence Day celebrations, the national capital is on high alert as of Friday, with stringent security measures in place. Snipers have been deployed on tall buildings, surveillance cameras have been installed throughout the city, and over 14,000 security and traffic personnel are on duty.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will address the nation from the Red Fort for the twelfth consecutive time on this occasion. Security forces from the Delhi Police, Army, and paramilitary units have been mobilized to ensure safety at multiple levels.

Advanced Surveillance Systems in Place

A senior police official indicated that CCTV cameras, drone detection systems, facial recognition cameras, and Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras are being utilized to monitor the event site and surrounding areas.

For the first time, an Under-Vehicle Surveillance System (UVSS) has been installed in five parking areas of the Red Fort to check for explosives, weapons, or prohibited items under vehicles. This technology employs cameras and scanners to detect threats or anomalies, thereby enhancing security at checkpoints and sensitive locations.

Access Control and Crowd Monitoring

Entry to the Red Fort on August 15 will be strictly by invitation only, and only designated vehicles will be allowed in the vicinity. Crowd monitoring will be facilitated by headcount cameras, and equipment will be used to identify abandoned or suspicious items, while intrusion detection cameras will oversee restricted areas.

Snipers and rooftop surveillance teams have been deployed to secure tall buildings near the Red Fort, and access to designated restricted areas will be controlled through entry mechanisms. Additionally, special teams have been assigned to monitor all major railway stations, interstate bus terminals, airports, and metro stations around the clock.

Increased Vigilance and Cyber Monitoring

Authorities have ramped up checks on passengers, luggage, and random verification of identification documents. Security measures have been strengthened at key establishments, including water treatment plants, with particular focus on the northern and central districts of Delhi.

The Delhi Police Commissioner has appointed a DCP-level officer to oversee drone detection systems. Surveillance along the Yamuna River has been intensified, with speed boats deployed for monitoring. The Commissioner has instructed officials to ensure that no feeding of birds occurs in areas surrounding the Red Fort.

Traffic Advisory Issued for Smooth Flow

To ensure smooth traffic and public safety, the Delhi Traffic Police has issued an advisory imposing several restrictions on vehicle movement, along with route diversions across the city. Traffic restrictions will be in effect from 4:00 AM to 10:00 AM on August 15 in the vicinity of the Red Fort, with major routes leading to the fort closed until late morning. Additionally, several bus routes have been reduced, and parking restrictions will be enforced.
